Your Favorite Plant, Your Next Travel Destination
I’ve had a lot of time to think about travel this year. I have about 10 trips planned in my head, with more destinations joining my bucket list daily. Where will you go next? At the beginning of every month, I give my plants a good soak and fertilize them. It takes about an hour to get them all in the sink. And as I was lugging them to and fro, I was thinking about travel and how much I love my greens. Where would they like to go on vacation? This funny thought sparked this silly blog post. What’s your favorite plant? Or which plant do you relate to the most? Find yourself on this list and see which travel destinations I recommend for you.
Got any ideas? Or think I missed something? Throw it in the comments. I’m actually really excited to see what kind of discussion this inspires!
Snake Plant
Traits: These foolproof beauties are low maintenance but not boring. They thrive best when essentially ignored, and stay colorful and tall despite a little neglect.
Travel Destination: Snake Plant-like travelers are happy exploring almost anywhere, but they especially love wide open spaces. You’ve gotta try glamping in Patagonia or a road trip up the western coast of Norway.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
Traits: The millennial status symbol. These trees are trendy AF, but despite everyone wanting one, not everyone can handle one. They need perfect lighting, precise watering, and don’t even think about moving them.
Travel Destination: Travelers that feel a little like a Fiddle Leaf Fig love to follow trends but hate to be one of a thousand tourists. Did you explore Iceland in like 2013 or 2014 (right before it absolutely blew up on Instagram)? You might love steadily trending upward destinations like Georgia (the country) or the Faroe Islands.
Pothos
Traits: These resilient vines can feel at home anywhere. They spread out and get comfy in any situation. Even when you give them a trim, they’ll stretch out their roots and start all over again.
Travel Destination: Pothos travelers are not easily overwhelmed. Even the most bustling cities leave them unfazed. Cairo, Egypt and Delhi, India intimidate even the most seasoned travelers. But not you!
Pilea Peperomioides
Traits: Its leaves are so perfectly round and flat, making this a truly unique beauty. The pilea peperomioides is famous for sprouting tiny friends that are easy to share.
Travel Destination: Pilea travelers are social butterflies. The best trips are ones where you made plenty of new friends. You also love beautiful destinations with lots of scenery and architecture to admire. Cartagena, Colombia and Saigon, Vietnam should be high on your list!
Maidenhair Fern
Traits: This fern is beautiful but its diva attitude makes it almost impossible. The light, temperature, and humidity must be perfect to show off its unique foliage.
Travel Destination: There’s no shame in traveling like a Maidenhair Fern. You’ve got sky-high expectations, and while you love adventure, you also like to be very — and I mean very — comfortable. Paris in the fall and Japan in the spring are truly the height of luxury.
Cactus
Traits: They might be as tough as nails, but they don’t just tolerate anything. And watch it with the watering — a little water goes a long way with these dry guys.
Travel Destination: If you’re anything like a cactus, you’re probably the best kind of budget traveler. Not the kind who happily goes on Carnival Cruises — nope. You like to explore off-the-beaten-path spots where your money goes a long way. It’s easy to find affordable — and sometimes even luxurious! — experiences in Panama and Thailand.
Monstera
Traits: Quite possibly the most Instagrammable plant on the planet. There’s a reason the monstera is so popular amongst influencers and wanna-be influencers. This green goddess is gorgeous. And just finicky enough to make it a status symbol.
Travel Destination: Okay, I’ll come right out and say, you’re a little basic. Look, it’s not a bad thing! You follow trends, you understand pop culture, and you appreciate the importance of aesthetics. You’re probably also busy balancing your personal life and career, so your travel inspiration comes primarily from Instagram. If you haven’t already been to Tulum and Bali, they probably on your bucket list. Want something a little different? Consider Portugal or Turkey — that’s where all those hot air balloons are you see on Instagram.
